About Sofia
Hello there!
Thanks for being curious and gossipy – why else would you be here? – so here is the low-down on what I do.
My full name is Sofia Gkiousou – which makes me the nightmare of customer services departments. Just call me Sofia. I am a resident of central(ish) London, UK for the last 6 years, having previously lived all my life in Greece (where, most people are surprised to learn, it actually snows from time to time).
I’ve tried my hand in a lot of things but there are always two constants: My fascination with technology and my love of words. Hence what I do – or try to do – in my day to day life is deal with communications using new ways to get a message out there and connect to people. I have a keen interest in social networks (both offline and online), MMORPGs, new media (although I don’t think the term is satisfactory) and anything that uses them, from advertising to politics.
I am currently working in Policy & External Relations at the energy sector (it’s my 9 to 5 and the best job ever).
I did my studying in the UK – first dealing with Humanities & Media and then reading up and researching Innovation & Technology Policy for my postgraduate work (but more on that on my academic blog).
I have a background in Public Affairs & Policy which means that I have worked with Ministers, I have attended Parliamentary Committees, I know how to address a Lord, I have sat at the official’s box in the House of Commons (it’s an experience – never let anyone tell you any different) and I watch BBC Parliament (it’s kinda sad but true).
I also have a background in digital communications and social media. I am the Wordsmith for SoMaFusion, a digital communications agency in London and I blog on the SoMaFusion travelogue along with our Codesmith – Manolis. Previously I helped with Yokaboo and I am forever grateful to the lovely people there and the great work they do. This means that I know most social networking sites, I tend to have zillions of social media profiles and I bore people to death discussing the digital Commons.
I like:
- People who get it
- People who are not afraid to experiment and get out there
- MMORPGs
- Cyberculture
- Art that wants to save the world (or at least make someone’s day)
I don’t like:
- People who pretend that they get it
- People who are too comfortable with the status quo
- Forums
- Art for art’s sake
- Sloppy research
