This was one of the very good debates at the conference that I went.
What is happening with IP and Creative Commons. DRM of course fits into the debate nicely so I thought I should repeat this video of Mr. Jussim from Sony Pictures talking about the economics of film making and DRM (he also conveniently mentions Lawrence Lessig and Creative Commons).

World Intellectual Property Organisation – International Conference on IP and the Creative Industries
Monday & Tuesday 29th & 30th of October 2007
If I had to characterise the conference with two words I’m afraid they would be “missed opportunity”.
For all the interesting things I heard and the extremely interesting people I met the conference was not only piched to government policy makers but to ones that had no idea of the creative industries at all. As a result the presentations stayed at a mostly descriptive level.

Special presentation
IP & Economic Issues in the Film Industries of India and Egypt
By Mr. Bertrand Moullier, Narval Media Ltd. London
My Notes:
In India and Egypt, before you join the broadband utopia you have to be able to pay the rent. If you have anything left over then you may be able to afford a PC. If there is a network then you may become a part of the Internet society. It’s a minority of 1 in 6 in India and probably 1 in 15 in Egypt.

My Commentrary: Nothing particularly interesting until Jared Jussim from Sony Pictures Entertainent spoke about film rights, copyright and economics. I’ve video – taped some of it – I think he has a good point in terms of costs. Listen to what he says about Lawrence Lessig and the Creative Commons.
A very good question to him was posed by Mrs. Irini Stamatoudi, the Director of the Hellenic Copyright Organization on what Sony has done to its model to actually adapt to the internet age. Mr. Jussim listed some different things that Sony does that especially to deal with problems in specific countries. Yet in actual answer to the question he did not present a different model for internet distrubution even though he promised that Sony is planning and researching constantly. Not very satisfactory in my opinion but well done to Mrs. Stamatoudi for a great question.

My commentary: It has been long but the presentation by Mr. Desmond Hui, one of the first or maybe even the first to measure the creative industries was really worth the long wait.
I will not bore the non-academic interested to death since this is all about indexes and measurement so you can find a link to his report further down.

Commentary:
A very interesting session with Professor Cunningham’s speech being extremely interesting. He noted that there is an emergent culture: interactive digital media and Internet-based distribution . Social networks and online experience being in potentia plateaus of cultural creation and ‘social network markets’. Visitors are now active participants in new media products as those are created online. Having said that I think that the existing framework of IP is quickly becoming redundant since it is based on the idea of the lone genius.
Of course this ties back to the presentation of Professor Keith Sawyer who stressed that this is an innacurate depiction of the creative process .
Mr. Sherif Saadallah (see below) mentioned a link between investment in R&D and a greater amount of innovative and creative outpout even though he stressed that this is not a link that has been proven. I consider this a little bit naughty to tell you the truth – since the link has not been proven (it hasn’t, trust me) why mention it at all. I think it all boils down to what i was saying earlier about the audience being mainly country representatitives – which needed to be convinced of the value of cultural industries. More on this later on.

There are more updates coming but for the benefit of my Creative Commons supporter friends in Greece here is a question I just posed in the WIPO International Conference on IP and the Creative Industries.
I asked if the panel thinks that there can be a balance between having an IP system and legislation and at the same time supporting a ‘creative – commons’ type approach.
